Carthage ISD celebrates Black History Month by recognizing Mr. Hermon Reed, Jr. Mr. Reed was an outstanding educator who began his career in 1960 teaching mathematics, chemistry, and physics at Turner High School. He was responsible for introducing the for the very first Science Fair at Turner High. After integration, he continued teaching science courses at Carthage Junior and High School until he retired in 1997 after 37 years of teaching. Mr. Reed also served the community in leadership positions including: Board of Trustees at Panola College from 1992 to 2000 and three terms as Panola County Commissioner of Precinct #3 from 2000 to 2012.

Carthage ISD celebrates Black History Month by recognizing Mrs. Glendell Pope Chadwick. Mrs. Chadwick was a 1967 graduate of Turner High School and served in the education profession for 35 years. She retired as an Educational Diagnostician from the Carthage Independent School District serving students students from CISD as well as those attending the Beckville and Gary Independent School Districts. Mrs. Chadwick was also the owner of the Knowledge Nook Daycare and instrumental in helping children to be academically ready for public school for more than 20 years. She was elected to the Panola College Board of Trustees in 2001 and served until she went to be with her Lord and Savior in 2017.

Carthage ISD celebrates Black History Month by recognizing Mrs. Fatha Burchette. Mrs. Burchette graduated from Turner High School in 1970 as a member of the last graduating class before mandatory integration of public schools in Panola County. In 1978, she began her career with the Carthage Independent School District as a substitute teacher and paraprofessional. The following year she obtained her teaching certification and began her full-time teaching career as a social studies teacher at the Baker-Koonce campus. In 2003, she was promoted to principal, a position she held until her retirement in 2010. Mrs. Burchette currently serves on the Panola College Board of Trustees.

In 1922, Mr. Turner began what was to be a lengthy career as a teacher and principal of the Carthage Colored Elementary and High School. During his tenure in Carthage, Mr. Turner established himself as one of the greatest educators in the State of Texas.

Carthage ISD celebrates Black History Month by recognizing Dr. Mildred Faye Jefferson. Dr. Jefferson was raised in Carthage and was the first African-American woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School. She was a founding leader of the pro-life movement with a powerful message of respect for all human beings from creation until death. A bust and plaque has been erected in Dr. Jefferson’s honor on the Carthage square.
