Every now and then, you come across a career that reminds you exactly why public education matters.

Mrs. Danetta Brown-Dorsey is that reminder.

Carthage ISD is proud to honor Mrs. Brown-Dorsey as the PACE Academy Teacher of the Year, recognizing an incredible 51 years of service dedicated to students who simply needed someone to believe in them and refuse to give up.

Fifty-one years.

Let that sink in.

Before alternative education programs had names, structures, or systems in place, she was already doing the work. She was Carthage ISD’s first DAEP teacher. She was building relationships, setting expectations, and changing lives long before PACE Academy ever existed. In many ways, she was PACE before PACE had a name.

That kind of career does not happen by accident. It is built on consistency, heart, and an unwavering belief that every student matters. Mrs. Brown-Dorsey has spent her career meeting students where they are and helping them see where they can go.

She built her life’s work around second chances and made sure those chances were real.

One of her most meaningful contributions has been the creation of the Second Chances and RISE graduation program at PACE Academy. Because of her vision and commitment, countless students have been given the opportunity to finish what they started. For many, it was not just about earning a diploma. It was about being seen, being valued, and being given the confidence to keep moving forward.

The mission of Carthage ISD PACE Academy is to provide a successful alternative educational setting that meets the unique needs of each student. In a safe and structured environment, students are challenged with a rigorous academic curriculum while also developing self-discipline and personal responsibility. With high expectations and a focus on growth, PACE is committed to preparing students for success in an ever-changing world.

Mrs. Brown-Dorsey has lived that mission every single day.

She has pushed students when they needed it. She has supported them when they doubted themselves. She has created an environment where accountability and compassion work side by side. The relationships she has built do not end when students leave her classroom. They last.

PACE Academy Principal Shelbye Almeida reflected on Mrs. Brown-Dorsey’s impact, sharing, ā€œThere are very few people who truly change the trajectory of students’ lives, and Mrs. Brown-Dorsey is one of them. She saw the ā€˜ciphers in the snow,’ the students who felt invisible, and made it her life’s work to make sure they were not forgotten. Her love for alternative education has never wavered because she understood it was never just about discipline, it was about dignity, purpose, and second chances. She has been a mentor to me in every sense of the word, showing me how to lead with conviction, grace, and an unwavering belief that every student has a purpose and can rise, no matter where they start. Because of her, I am better. Because of her, countless students are better. And that kind of impact doesn’t retire, it becomes a legacy that lasts a lifetime.ā€

Her impact cannot be measured in numbers alone. It is seen in the lives she helped redirect, the graduates who almost were not, and the young people who learned that their story was not over.

That is the power of public education.

And that is the power of a teacher who refuses to give up.

Across Carthage ISD, Mrs. Brown-Dorsey’s influence has helped shape a culture that believes in doing what is right for kids, no matter the challenge. Her legacy is not only in the programs she helped build, but in the standard she set for what it means to truly serve students.

Fifty-one years of service is remarkable.

The lives changed along the way are what make it unforgettable.

Carthage ISD is honored to celebrate Mrs. Danetta Brown-Dorsey as PACE Academy Teacher of the Year. Her career stands as a testament to what is possible when passion meets purpose and when one educator commits to making a difference, year after year, student after student.
