Carthage High School will honor four distinguished individuals with induction into the Carthage High School Athletic Hall of Honor on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the Carthage High School Performing Arts Center (PAC). The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. and is open to the community to celebrate the achievements of outstanding alumni and supporters who have significantly contributed to the legacy of Carthage athletics.
The 2025 inductees are:
Mervin Scott (Class of 1961 – Track & Basketball)
Mervin Scott was a standout athlete at Carthage High School, competing in both track and basketball for four years. As a senior, he won district, regional, and advanced to the state meet in the mile run, clocking a time of 4:31. Known for his academic achievements and leadership, he was voted “Most Likely to Succeed” and served as Student Council president. After high school, Scott attended Taylor University on a track scholarship and later earned degrees from SFA and SMU. He spent his career as both an educator and a Methodist minister, serving East Texas communities for more than 30 years before retiring from the ministry.
Luke Burnett (Class of 2005 – Baseball)
Luke Burnett made his mark on the diamond, earning a starting role as a sophomore and quickly becoming one of the top pitchers in the state. He was named All-District Defensive Player of the Year in 2003 and went on to receive First Team All-State, Texas Sports Writers 3A Player of the Year, and All-District Pitcher of the Year honors his senior year. He was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2005, but opted for a college education at Louisiana Tech, where he earned WAC Pitcher of the Week honors and was named to the Baseball America All-American Pre-Season Second Team in 2008 as well as being named to the Brooks Wallace Award watch list. He was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 14th round and went on to play professionally before beginning a career as a CPA in Carthage, where he resides with his family.
Corey Roberts (Class of 2001 – Football & Track)
Corey Roberts was a two-sport standout for the Bulldogs, excelling in both football and track. He earned First Team All-District honors and went on to play football at Sam Houston State University on a full scholarship where he earned All-American honors as a tight-end. He was pursued as a free agent by the Indianapolis Colts but chose not to continue playing football. Roberts then graduated from SHSU and pursued a career in education, working as a coach at schools across the Dallas area before earning a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix and moving into a role in administration. Today, he serves as an associate principal of operations at Atascocita High School in Humble ISD.
Special Recognition
In addition to the three athletes, the Hall of Honor Committee will recognize a special contributor who has demonstrated years of dedication and countless hours of service in support of Carthage ISD athletics. This honoree will be revealed during Friday night’s ceremony.
