CJHS will be hosting guest speaker Mark G. Mitchell in the Junior High
auditorium on May 21, 2008. Mr. Mitchell is an author/illustrator and
will conduct a program based on one of his books Raising La Belle:
The Story of the La Salle Shipwreck. Mr. Mitchell will be visiting
us courtesy of grant funding presented to us by the CISD Education
Foundation. The 4th graders from B-K will see the first
performance at 8:30 a.m. The seventh grade classes will see the next
performance at 10:00-11:00 (3rd period classes then dismiss to 4th
period, then lunch) the 8th grade will see the last performance at
11:00-12:00 (4th-5th period classes, dismiss to lunch). Here is a brief
description of the program taken from Mr. Mitchell's flyer:
"Under the mud below twelve feet of water lay La Belle,
the prized ship of famous French explorer Robert Cavelier de La Salle.
In 1995 the ship was discovered by the Texas Historical Commission. For
the next year, archeologists labored to extract the ship and her amazing
cargo. The excavation made headlines worldwide. The Belle was
the last hope of escape from Fort St. Louis, a Texas settlement in
trouble. When the ship sank, the fort's inhabitants--including pirates,
missionaries, and orphans--confronted an unmapped wilderness and hostile
Karankawa Indians. Raising La Belle interweaves
highlights of one of America's most exciting archeological finds with
the story of Texas' lost French Colony."
Mr. Mitchell will have actual photographs of the excavation and will be
drawing/illustrating as he tells the story of La Belle.
Carthage Junior High LRC Offers a great collection of books and materials for young adults. We also offer lessons that are coordinated with the teachers to meet curricular needs, and an occasional "just for fun" program to encourage reading. We participate in the Accelerated Reader program and have a vast collection of AR books available for our students to read. Research plays a significant role in the education of Junior High students. We subscribe to the Texas Library Connection through Thomson/Gale Group, Inc. Students can access this website from our campus or from their home by clicking on the first link below. The second link is a web site geared toward boys who are reluctant to read. |

Storyteller
Jeannine Pasini Beckman comes to CJHS
Often called the Ferrari Testa Rossa of modern storytelling, Jeannine Pasini
Beckman roared into CJH, Nov. 2 and delightfully entertained students.
Drawing from an extensive repertoire of folklore
and literature, Ms. Beckman presented a developmentally appropriate storytelling
session for students and followed up with a small group creative writing workshop.
Ms.
Beckman's visit was funded by a grant from the Carthage ISD Education
Foundation.
She
is known throughout the country for the wit, passion, and integrity of
her work. She has been in the vanguard of the storytelling revival in
the Southwest and is co-founder and
past president of both the Houston
Storyteller
s Guild and the Tejas
Storytelling Association. She has been and is involved in many other
storytelling activities and associations and is the recipient of numerous
prestigious awards. She has told and taught all over the United States and in
many foreign countries. Ms. Beckman practices traditional storytelling without
props, books, or AV materials. Storytelling is one of the few activities in
which individuals of any age are able to participate on an equal level; there is
no wrong way to listen to a story.
