“Razz-a-Matazz and all that Jazz”--($1,000) Primary—LeAnn Williams, applicant—This grant funds 2 performances by the Shreveport Symphony Jazz Ensemble for all 550 Primary students. . “ABC—The Opera’s for Me”--$600—Primary and Libby—LeAnn Williams, applicant—A live performance of “Little Red Riding Hood’ by the Shreveport Opera Express enables all Primary and Libby students to experience first hand the literary and fine arts concepts they have studied. “Rolling Back in Time in Jefferson, TX”--$2,057—Primary—Merry Bagley, Amanda Ivy, Tina Mill, and Shari Shull, applicants—After studying early Texas history, all first graders will experience how technology has changed transportation as they take a narrated ride in a mule-drawn wagon and ride on an authentic steam railroad train past many historic East Texas landmarks in and around Jefferson. “Inclusion and Beyond: No Child Left Behind”--$3,300—Primary and Libby—Cynthia Harkrider and Mandy Leggett, applicants—This grant will provide teachers PK-3 with successful inclusion strategies and practical solutions for a range of mixed abilities. All PK-3 students (1,090) should benefit.
“I’ll Take Motivation for $500”--$2,323—Libby—Clarinda Hardy, applicant—Classroom Jeopardy is an innovative method of measuring comprehension in any content area. A great motivational tool that stimulates lively competition among classmates and classes, this grant funds 2 electronic setups available for all Libby students. “Setting Our Sights to be Sci-Port Scientists!”--$4,352—Libby—Carla Cheshire, applicant—Well-planned trips to Sci-Port Discovery Center in Shreveport provide exciting hands-on activities and experiences that directly relate to the science TEKS. Last year Sci-Port focused on the oceans; this year, it’s insects. “The All-Achiever Store”--$4,312—Libby—Clarinda Hardy, applicant—This grant enables Libby students to purchase items from the achievement store using play money received from teachers. Skills targeted are counting, using money, adding, and subtracting. Third graders will also work in the store. “Technology Fun for Everyone, Grades 2 and 3”--$4,564—Tryphena Bledsoe, applicant—These two grants provide all second and third grade teachers with vital technology for innovative, attention-getting lessons in all subject areas. Exciting teacher-made lessons, Web sites, power point presentations, student writing—different approaches that are dramatically easier to see and manipulate are possible with these powerful teaching tools.
“A Visit to the Strand”--$881—Baker-Koonce—Audrey Almeida and Rene Nix, applicants—This grant enables the entire fourth grade to experience a live professional performance from the Strand Theatre’s 2004-05 Children’s Series. “Sci-Port Mania”--$2,021—Baker-Koonce—Susan Harris and Pam Todd, applicants—An investigative trip to Sci-Port Discovery Center in Shreveport enhances fifth grade science lessons and fosters enthusiasm in this area. “It’s Simply Medieval”--$1,156—Baker-Koonce—Dana Chambers and Ginger McLaughlin, applicants—All sixth grade students will see historic dates and events come to life on a field trip to Medieval Times Dinner and Tournament in Dallas. The culmination of a Middle Ages unit of study, students will be immersed in the culture of the period. “51st Annual Conference for the Advancement of Mathematics Teaching”--$3,061—Baker-Koonce—Lanelda Soape and Donna Cariker, applicants—This grant funds 9 teachers’ attendance at CAMT in San Antonio this summer to hear the best math professionals in Texas. They will return with new ideas, strategies, and technology experience. “Hands-On Science”--$3,051—CJHS—Kiley Schumacher and Shannon Baldree, applicants—This grant funds 3 new science models and 5 science kits that will make 7th and 8th grade science concepts come alive in the classroom each year. “Encore!”--$3,500—CJHS—Staci Davis, applicant--This grant funds an expertly staged production of five classic short stories for all junior high students. “Poetic Pursuits”—$1,780—CJHS—Lynda Johnson, applicant--This grant bring poet Sara Holbrook to CJHS to perform a poetry recitation and conduct small group poetry writing workshops with students. “Caught You Learning”--$4,090—CJHS—Jay Malone and Nancy Langford, applicants—This innovative teaching tool combines interaction, assessment, and motivation for social studies classes. It places technology into the hands of students in the form of individual response pads to provide instant and confidential assessment of required knowledge—and it’s fun.
“Solutions for the SAT—Software Site License”--$2,640—CHS—Paula Carter and Sherri Smith, applicants—This grant funds the purchase of a site license for SAT software that can be accessed from school computers or from students’ home computers. This software capability will improve students’ knowledge and skills tested on the college SAT entrance exam. “CISD Scholars Academy”--$300—CHS—Tammy Alexander, applicant—Leila Belle LaGrone Memorial Teaching Grant--A summer tutorial program offers CHS students intense preparation for college entrance exams (ACT and SAT) and the PSAT. “A Student Success Initiative”--$1,468—CHS—Norvelle Walker, applicant—This grant funds trips to the Food Service Culinary Arts Institute at TSTC in Waco and the Art Institute Foods Service in Dallas, which will provide important instructional models for students to compete successfully in the food service industry. “CISD Sounds of the Future—Digital Audio Processing”--$463—CHS—Donnie Pitchford, applicant—Leila Belle LaGrone Memorial Teaching Grant--The purchase of audio processing and editing software enhances last year’s grant and enables students to learn the operation of the current type of system used by radio stations and audio production facilities. “A Macroscopic View of a Microscopic World”--$4,000—CHS—Nola Manis and Joyce Oliver, applicants—Data/video projectors for life science teachers provide students with a greatly improved view of the microscopic world and a way to present data in a clear, concise manner. “Projecting into the Unknown”--$2,861—CHS—Angela Hardy, applicant—With the multimedia projector and transit, geometry students can actually see changes in shapes and angles and not just try to imagine them. “Creative Eyes”--$1,476—CHS—Millie Wilkie, applicant—This grant provides 2 sets of art posters, a tour of the Dallas Art Museum, and study with a local artist. “Live and Learn in San Antonio”--$3,006—CHS—Illene Richter, applicant—Advanced Placement US History students will tour San Antonio missions and other cultural landmarks to extend learning and appreciation of other cultures. “Renaissance Fair”--$2,500—CHS—Illene Richter and John Boland, applicants—This imaginative fair will expose students to the customs and lifestyles of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. History, English, science, drama, art, industrial arts, choir and band departments will all have areas of responsibility. Students in the entire district will participate. “Preserving History While Preparing for a Future Profession”--$2,920—CHS—Annette Johnson, applicant—This grant enables journalism students to move into the digital age of photography with the purchase of 4 digital cameras. It also funds 3 field trips to newspaper, radio, TV, and publishing offices to study the field of journalism firsthand. “Showing the Way”--$4,984—CHS—Charles Worley, applicant—This innovative technology will enhance student computer skills, reduce time on redundant tasks, and make classroom time more productive. “Algebra Camp”--$1,850—CHS—Art Horton, applicant—A one-week, 20-hour summer course utilizes effective concrete activities to study Algebra I concepts in small groups.
